Research for a new six-part podcast on the history of the San Diego Comic-Con is provided by Cinema Studies Associate Professor Erin Hanna. The podcast includes interviews with Hanna and research from her latest book: Only at Comic-Con: Hollywood, Fans, and the Limits of Exclusivity.

Cinema Studies is excited to congratulate Erin Hanna who has been promoted to associate professor with indefinite tenure! Erin joined the University of Oregon in 2014 and teaches courses on television; the film industry; fan culture; and gender media and diversity. Her research focuses on the relationship between media industries and audiences. Her most recent book, Only at Comic-Con: Hollywood, Fans, and the Limits of Exclusivity, examines the connection between exclusivity and the proliferation of media industry promotion at the longest-running comic convention in North America.

Congratulations to Cinema Studies Associate Professor Daniel Gómez Steinhart on receiving a 2021 Summer Stipend for Humanities and Creative Arts Faculty from the Provost for work on his new book project, Cross-Border Hollywood: Production Politics and Practices in Mexico.
The Center for the Study of Women in Society has announced 2021-22 funding awards for scholarship, research and creative work on women and gender. Cinema Studies Assistant Professor Masami Kawai has received a faculty research grant for “Valley of the Tall Grasses” (film).
Kawai also received a Creative Arts Fellowship from the Provost and a 2021 Faculty Research Award from Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI).
