Cinema Studies is grateful for the talented team of students who work in the department and are a valuable part of the CINE community! Meet Jasmin "JJ" Johnson @gojjgojj, CINE class of ’24, who is working in the CINE office this year and is excited to share what she’s learned about the department and what it has to offer.

“I love how the CINE major forces you out of your comfort zone in terms of film perspective. I've watched and learned from films from different countries and decades, widening my view of how film can or should be. Whether or not you consider yourself a dedicated cinephile or only watch movies every once in a while, you'll learn something new. The CINE community is diverse, creative, and has never been afraid to make innovations in filmmaking, film criticism, and film appreciation. To me, being a CINE student is the freedom of self-expression, open communication, and connection with a myriad of critical thinkers.”

If you’re looking for a great film to watch, consider JJ’s suggestions. “My favorite film is actually one I first watched for a CINE class, Cheryl Dunye's THE WATERMELON WOMAN, because of its humor, representation of Black filmmakers, and its unique form of narrative storytelling through a mock documentary format. I'm also interested in Brazilian culture and love Brazilian film! My favorites are CITY OF GOD and THE SECOND MOTHER.”
