Queer Cinema is the Focus of Schnitzer Cinema’s Queer Productions Series

Schnitzer Cinema, the JSMA’s annual film series, showcases queer cinema as part of the year-long program “Queer Productions.” Supported by the English Department and the College of Arts and Sciences, “Queer Productions” includes film screenings at The Wayward Lamb, classes, guest artists and scholars, a symposium, and the exhibition “Relationship” by Zachary Drucker and Rhys Ernst. Queer Film Series at The Wayward Lamb: Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman

Schnitzer Cinema: Tender Fictions and Maya Deren’s Sink with Skype conversation with Barbara Hammer

February 10, 7 p.m. Location: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

An acclaimed pioneer of queer cinema, Barbara Hammer has produced more than 75 works, including early lesbian avant-garde films that remain of fundamental importance for a new generation of artists. Most recently, she was honored with retrospectives at MoMA (New York, 2010) and the Tate Modern (London, 2012). Innovative, funny, and historic, Tender Fictions is an autobiographical exploration of the search for and meaning of gay community, featuring a rich montage of home movies, experimental films, news footage, and personal photographs. Maya Deren’s Sink explores Deren’s concepts of space, time, and form through visits and projections filmed in her L.A. and New York homes. Schnitzer Cinema series is programmed by Richard Herskowitz, JSMA curator of media arts and director of Cinema Pacific, with the help of Professor Quinn Miller.  Free admission and refreshments! Schnitzer Cinema: Welcome to this House with Skype conversation with Barbara Hammer

February 11, 2 p.m. Location: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

Welcome to this House will be shown in the museum at 2 p.m., with an additional Skyped talk with Barbara Hammer (2015) is a feature documentary film on the homes and loves of poet Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), about life in the shadows, and the anxiety of art making without full self-disclosure. Hammer filmed in Bishop’s ‘best loved homes’ in the U.S., Canada, and Brazil believing that buildings and landscapes bear cultural memories. Interviews with poets, friends, and scholars provide “missing documents” of numerous female lovers. Schnitzer Cinema series is programmed by Richard Herskowitz, JSMA curator of media arts and director of Cinema Pacific, with the help of Professor Quinn Miller.  Free admission and refreshments!
