"The Art of Producing" Featuring Award-Winning Producer Ryan Zacarias

Coming Soon! The Art of Producing with Award-Winning Producer Ryan Zacarias

The University of Oregon Department of Cinema Studies proudly welcomes award-winning producer Ryan Zacarias for the fifth annual Harlan J. Strauss Visiting Filmmaker Series.

Cinema Studies has been honored to bring the Harlan J. Strauss Visiting Filmmaker Series to Oregon for the past five years. Through the generosity of Harlan (PhD ’74) and Rima Strauss, the Department of Cinema Studies is the recipient of an endowment that brings successful industry filmmakers and emerging talents to campus annually to mentor students and hold public conversations.

Cinema Studies is excited to continue the engaging experience for our students and the film community this spring through a series of remote events made available in virtual formats. In addition to the remote events, Zacarias is mentoring students and guest lecturing in the spring term course “CINE 408:  The Art of Producing.”

Associate Professor Peter Alilunas Discusses Preparing for Remote Teaching

Peter Alilunas

"My home office is being used by my partner, so I’ve carved out space in our guest room and Frankenstein’d it into a makeshift studio. Keep in mind — even though I am a Cinema Studies Professor — I have ZERO production experience! I’ve never made anything, ever. I’m a historian! If you need to know the history of the VCR, I’m your guy! But making a video? Um, what?

But I knew I wanted to do something interesting, engaging, and memorable for our students. For many of them, this is their last term! I just can’t have them go out without at least trying to do something fun. Besides, anyone who’s ever had my classes knows I’m just not going to do anything if it isn’t in the spirit of positivity, optimism, and enthusiasm. That’s just who I am, even now.

A message from Cinema Studies faculty and staff

Duck Mascot

Dear Cinema Studies majors,

As UO joins a growing list of universities switching to remote learning this spring, your Cinema Studies faculty and staff are united in our efforts to provide equal access to your education. We are all facing new demands: juggling new routines or responsibilities, negotiating limited access to technology or reliable internet, caring for ourselves and loved ones, learning new technologies (sometimes with kids running around us), and more.

CINE Community Message from Dept. Head Professor Ovalle

Cinema Studies Department Head Priscilla Peña Ovalle

Hello, Cinema Studies majors!

Hello, everyone. I'm Professor Ovalle, Department Head of Cinema Studies. I just wanted to let you know that your well-being is a key concern of our faculty and staff. For these reasons and more, we are currently working hard to prepare for remote learning in early spring. I do, however, want to acknowledge that this is a stressful time and that the first few weeks of spring will undoubtedly present challenges as we all juggle new demands with concerns about our loved ones and more.
