The application for this class requires a film resume and a sample of your visual style. Below are resources to help you make the most of this application and professionalization process!

What is a film resume?

Resumes are important tools—for this class as well as for your career goals. A film resume showcases your savvy in presenting yourself, demonstrates your attention to detail, answers questions that matter to a decision maker, highlights your successes, creates a personal connection with the reader, and is quick and easy to read. For more information, please refer to Turn Your Current Resume into an Industry-Ready Resume10 Steps To Writing Your Film Production Resumeand other samples.

How can I convey my visual style using samples from my work?

The application asks you to provide links to stills and/or videos that represent your visual style. Look for samples from your work–by linking to clips, stills, or a reel–that convey your aesthetic interests and investments. These examples can be from a narrative, documentary, or experimental film in which you were the director or cinematographer, and/or any other samples that illustrate your visual style.

CINE 426: The Art of Directing
SPRING TERM:  Monday & Wednesday | Noon to 1:50 pm

This class focuses on the building blocks to develop a narrative director’s voice. Students will explore how to create compelling characters and use the power of cinematic language to affect audiences. Filmmaker Adam Piron will guest teach four classes, sharing his approach to directing and providing feedback on a specific film exercise. We will view and discuss films that have influenced Piron’s work, investigate narrative tools and aesthetics, and critique classmates’ work as a way to integrate theory into practice. By the end, students will be empowered to generate strategies to create personal, original films.

This course is open to Cinema Studies majors only and is repeatable. Registration requires prerequisites, completion of the online application, and approval to register by a selection committee.
