On November 25, 2022, Associate Professor Dong Hoon Kim taught a masterclass at the University Institution of Spanish Cinema of the University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. Professor Kim was invited to deliver a lecture on North Korean cinema as a part of "Reflexiones sobre la cultura asiática" ("Reflections on Asian Culture"), a special film studies course funded by Eurasian Foundation from Asia.

Professor Kim’s lecture examined a range of political, cultural, industrial, and theoretical issues in North Korean cinema such as political mobilization of film production, cinematic anesthetization of North Korea’s state ideology, representations of national identity and nationalism, gender and sexuality politics, meanings of film genres and stars in the socialist film culture, and transnational film and media co-productions.

Dong Hoon Kim’s research and teaching interests include visual culture, early cinema, film and media spectatorship, and Asian film, media and popular culture. He has been engaged with a variety of activities in the field besides his academic research, directing short films, working for film festivals, and serving as consultant to film companies.
